RedStorm sweeps Midway for first MSC win

MIDWAY, Ky. - Caden Donaldson had another big night on the net and the University of Rio Grande picked up its first Mid-South Conference win of the season, posting a 3-0 victory over Midway University, Wednesday night, at Marshall Gymnasium.
The RedStorm improved to 7-16 overall and 1-4 in MSC play by virtue of a 25-19, 30-28, 25-19 triumph.
Midway dropped to 2-15 overall and 0-6 against conference foes with the loss.
Donaldson, a senior from Jackson, Ohio, followed up 22 kills and a .548 attack percentage perfomance in a loss to Bluefield (Va.) University on Tuesday night with 22 kills and a .529 swing percentage against the Eagles.
Rio Grande finished with a .373 attack percentage as a team, tallying 47 kills and 16 errors in 83 swings.
The RedStorm never trailed in set one, but had to fight off five Midway set point chances before scoring the final three winners - all on kills by Donaldson - to claim set two.
Midway led 14-12 in the third stanza before Rio reeled off six straight points to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The Eagles did draw within 20-19 after a service ace by Martin Walker, but the RedStorm scored the final five points to seal the match.
Sophomore Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 38 assists and three block assists for Rio Grande, while freshman Otavio Tonoli (Campinas, Brazil) had seven digs and junior Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH) had a solo block and three block assists.
Colton Marsh and Jai'Den Chinnis had six kills each for Midway, which finished with 27 kills and 15 errors in 72 attacks (.167). Marsh also had a pair of service aces, while Chinnis had a solo block and two block assists.
Jose Conde had 13 assists for the Eagles, while Joseph Boulaoude had eight digs.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday with an MSC match at Cumberland (Tenn.) University. First serve is set for 4 p.m. EDT.
