MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Calumet College of St. Joseph fired off a .354 attack percentage and cruised to 3-0 win over the University of Rio Grande men's volleyball team as part of Friday's action in the Adidas Game-One Pilot Invitational, hosted by Bethel University, at Goodman Gymnasium.
The Crimson Wave (6-4) picked up their fourth straight sets win of the season by scores of 25-50, 25-18, 25-19.
Rio Grande dropped to 1-5 with a fourth straight loss.
The RedStorm led by as many as six points in the opening set, taking an 11-5 advantage after a kill by junior Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH), before Calumet reeled off seven straight winners to grab a 15-13 lead - a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Set two saw Rio lead 8-7 after a kill by junior Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH), but a 4-0 spurt allowed the Crimson Wave to take the lead and a later run of five consecutive winners produced a 21-14 cushion and an eventual win of the set for a commanding match lead.
Calumet led from nearly start to finish in what proved to be the final stanza.
The Crimson Wave finished with 43 kills and 14 errors in 82 swings for a .354 attack percentange, including a .444 mark (15 kills, three errors, 27 attacks) in the second period.
Francis Hauze and Daniel Lopez had 10 kills each to fuel the winning effort, while Brayden Richardson had 38 assists. Lopez also had a team-high six digs.
Gioele Iacono added a solo block and three block assists for CCSJ.
Kaylor had a match-high 12 kills for Rio Grande, which tallied only six more kills (26) than it did attack errors (20) in 79 swings.
Sophomore Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 20 assists and senior Caden Donaldson (Jackson, OH) added six digs in a losing cause, while junior Ethan Johnson (Hamilton, OH) had three solo blocks.
Rio Grande wraps up play in the two-day event on Saturday morning against Lawrence Tech (Mich.) and Judson (Ill.). Match times are set for 10 a.m. and noon.
