Maple Leafs drop RedStorm in straight sets

Rio Grande Sports Information
GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen College pulled away late in each of the first two sets before using a big scoring spurt just ahead of the midway point in the third stanza for a straight sets victory over the University of Rio Grande, Saturday afternoon, in non-conference men's volleyball action at the Ruth Gunden Gym.
The Maple Leafs improved to 6-10 as a result of their 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 triumph.
Rio Grande dropped to 5-16 with a fifth consecutive loss.
The RedStorm led 16-15 in the opening set before the hosts assumed control with a 7-0 scoring run en route to an early match lead.
Rio led 23-20 in set two, but Goshen reeled off five straight points - two on kills and three on RedStorm errors - to take the set and a 2-0 match lead.
The final period, though, was woefully lacking in drama.
Rio trailed 6-5 after a service error by the Maple Leafs, but Goshen proceeded to score 10 straight winners and never looked back.
Hasan Hadzic and Ishmail Bangura had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead Goshen, which finished with a .220 attack percentage (34 kills, 16 errors, 82 swings). Hadzic also had seven block assists and six service aces, while Bangura tied for team-high honors with six digs.
Wyatt Bollinger added 32 assists and six digs for the Maple Leafs.
Junior Caden Donaldson (Jackson, OH) led Rio in the loss with eight kills, while sophomore Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) had 20 assists.
Sophomore Bobby Meifert (Bolingbrook, IL) led the RedStorm with 10 digs and three service aces, while sophomore Sam Winhoven (Pickerington, OH) had two solo blocks and one block assist.
Rio Grande finished with 23 kills and 17 errors over 72 attacks for a .083 swing percentage.
The RedStorm return to action Monday night at Roosevelt University. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
