Bruins rally, pull away from Rio men

Rio Grande Sports Information
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Host Carolina University spotted the University of Rio Grande an early lead before storming from behind to post a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18) victory over the RedStorm, Tuesday night, in non-conference men's volleyball action at Williams Gymnasium.
Rio Grande slipped to 2-3 with the loss.
Carolina, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), improved to 2-3 with the win.
Rio coughed up a four-point lead midway through the opening set, but rallied from a 19-17 deficit by scoring eight of the final 11 points - including each of the final three winners - to grab the early match lead.
After the RedStorm forged a 16-all tie in set two following a kill by sophomore Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH), the Bruins rallied to score nine of the final 11 points in the period to even things at one set each.
Carolina kept things rolling from that point on, tallying 23 kills and just seven attack errors over 41 swings in the final two sets.
Rio Grande, on the other hand, had 19 kills and 20 attack errors in 65 attacks over the final three stanzas.
The RedStorm's only lead in set three came at 1-0 and Carolina led set four from start to finish.
Bryson Abernathy and Mason Chambers finished with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the Bruins, who finished with a .306 swing percentage for the match (44 kills, 18 errors, 85 attacks).
Tijhmir Glasco had 36 assists and Steven Wilson finished with eight digs.
Abernathy also had four service aces in the winning effort.
Kaylor led Rio Grande with nine kills, while freshman Mitch Bartecki (New Lenox, IL) totaled 24 assists and sophomore Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) had five digs.
Sophomore Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH) had a match-high five service aces in the loss, while Bartecki also had a solo block and two block assists.
As a result of its swing struggles over the final three sets, Rio Grande finished the match with 29 kills and 26 errors in 87 attacks (.034).
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday when it hosts Adrian (Mich.) University in its home opener.
First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Newt Oliver Arena.
