Rio men swept by Rams, Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Bluefield College and Georgetown College each rolled to straight sets wins over the University of Rio Grande, Friday night, in men's volleyball play at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
The Rams posted a 25-14, 28-26, 25-10 win in a match that wasn't on the original schedule and was not considered a Mid-South Conference tilt.
The host Tigers upended the RedStorm in the regularly-schedule MSC affair by scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-11.
The losses left Rio Grande at 1-20 overall and 0-13 in conference play.
In the opener against Bluefield, Rio Grande was blown out in sets one and three and failed to hold a late advantage in set two.
BC led 10-1 to begin the first stanza and opened up a 22-4 lead in set three. The middle period saw Rio lead 24-22, but fail to capitalize on three set points as the Rams finished with six of the final eight winners.
Rio Grande had three more attack errors (24) than it did kills (21) in 66 swings for a -.045 attack percentage.
Bluefield finished at .200 (29 kills, 16 errors, 65 attacks) and also had 12 service aces.
Devon Robinson had eight kills and six aces for BC (9-9), while Caleb Word had 16 assists and four aces and Tony Martin added 10 assists.
Fernand Morales added 13 digs in the winning effort.
Freshman Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH) had seven kills to lead Rio Grande, while freshman Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) had 16 assists and two service aces and freshman Jose Perdomo (Venado Tuerto, Argentina) had four digs.
Freshman Sam Winhoven (Pickerington, OH) also had four block assists in the loss.
Against No. 14-ranked Georgetown, things didn't fare much better.
The Tigers (16-5, 10-1 MSC) led big out of the gate in set one, used a big run to pull away midway through set two and built their lead throughout set three to finish off the match.
GC had 32 kills and just five errors in 50 swings for a staggering .540 attack percentage, while also adding 15 service aces to the winning recipe.
Tyler Chavez had 10 kills to pace the hosts, while Finn Heinemann had 20 assists and nine aces.
Cooper Jacobelli had seven digs for Georgetown.
Kaylor and freshman Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH) had two kills each for the RedStorm, while Mohr had six assists and Perdomo added five digs.
Rio had only eight kills and 16 errors over the course of 51 attacks.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, hosting Indiana Tech for a 2 p.m. first serve at the Newt Oliver Arena.
