RedStorm men grab early lead at RSC Championships

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men own a commanding lead after Friday's opening day of action at the 2025 River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at a soggy Stockmeister Track and Field.
     The RedStorm tallied 102 points over nine scored events and leads Indiana University East by 37 points. Shawnee State is currently third with 57 points.
     The top eight finishers in each event earn points toward the overall team championship.
     Rio Grande had 14 individual scoring performances on Friday and was led by junior Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), who took first place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:48.84.
     The RedStorm's other victory came in the 4x800 relay, where the quartet of sophomore JJ Larue (Chillicothe, OH), sophomore Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), sophomore Kasy Science (Marietta, OH) and freshman John Young (Leroy, OH) crossed the finish line in 7:43.66.
     The remainder of Rio's scoring finishes came from sophomore Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV), who placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.93m; freshman Logen Justice (Lancaster, OH), who was second in the high jump after an effort of 1.90m; freshman Wes Taylor (Lancaster, OH), who was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:26.96; sophomore Zach Whitley (Wheelersburg, OH), who was second in the 5,000-meter race walk with a time of 22:29.90; junior Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH), who placed third in the long jump at 6.47m; freshman Anton Meinlschmidt (Weibeyoke, Germany), who was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:35.88; junior Mugisha Pomossene (Dayton, OH), who finished third in the 5,000-meter race walk with a time of 24:16.06; freshman Ryder Crawford (Owensville, OH), who took third place in the 10,000-meter run after crossing in 31:16.24; junior Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH), who was fourth in the long jump at 6.42m and who tied for fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.85m; sophomore Brayden Adams (Ironton, OH), who was fourth in the javelin throw at 42.38m; senior Danuel Persinger (Glouster, OH), who was fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:19.78; and senior Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH), who was fifth in the long jump at 6.37m.
     Rio Grande also had 10 different performances in preliminary round action which qualified for Saturday's finals.
     Sophomore Troy Mason (Grenville, Grenada) had the top qualifying mark in both the 100- and 200-meter dash events with times of 10.53 and 20.96, respectively.
     Junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) had the second-quickest time in the 200 (22.22) and the third-fastest in the 100 (11.05), while Woodson was the fifth-fastest in both the 100 (11.11) and the 200 (22.57).
     Harris had the third-best time in the 200 (22.27), graduate senior Chase McClay (McDermott, OH) was seventh-fastest in the 100 (11.22), Skaggs was fourth-fastest in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.05 and freshman Dalton Ferguson (Huntington, WV) was fifth-fastest in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.08.
     Saturday's final day of competition is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
