RedStorm's Jencson, Woodson notch first-place finishes at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande men's track and field team recorded two first-place finishes and two dozen Top 10 showings in Saturday's Last Chance Meet hosted by West Virginia University at the Mylan Park Track & Field Complex.
The meet was not team scored. Unfortunately, none of the 24 notable finishes by the RedStorm qualified for the NAIA National Championships, which take place later this month in Marion, Ind.
Rio's first-place finishes came from freshman Teddy Jencson (Baltimore, OH), who won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58.07, and sophomore Daunevyn Woodson (Charleston, WV), who won the long jump with an effort of 6.64m.
Senior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH) finished second in the Twilight 800 with a time of 1:55.50, while three others - freshman Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), junior Jorden Williams (Springfield, OH) and freshman Victor Day (Pedro, OH) - all had third-place outings.
Science was third in the Twilight 1,500 with a time of 4:05.49, Williams was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.59 and Day was third in the triple jump with an effort of 12.22m.
Among the other Top 10 finishers for the RedStorm were freshman Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was fourth in the Twilight 1,500 with a time of 4:05.81; sophomore Mugisha Pomossene (Kampala, Uganda), who was fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:20.53 and seventh in the 800-meter run at 2:08.41; junior Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH), who was fourth in the triple jump at 12.18m and seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.00m; freshman Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV), who was fifth in the shot put at 14.39m, ninth in the discus throw with an effort of 40.16m and 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.98m; Jencson, who placed sixth in the Twilight 1,500 with a time of 4:06.58; freshman JJ Larue (Chillicothe, OH), who was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:43.97; freshman Nate Taylor (Corning, OH), who was seventh in the 1,500-meter run after crossing in 4:36.93; freshman Jayden Dunlap (Gallipolis, OH), who took eighth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.37; freshman Brayden Adams (Ironton, OH), who finished ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.28; junior Danuel Persinger (Bidwell, OH), who was ninth in the Twilight 800 with a time of 1:57.96; freshman Garrett Fister (Harrodsburg, KY), who was ninth in the long jump with a time of 5.47m; freshman Nick Knight (Proctorville, OH), who was ninth in the shot put with an effort of 12.90m; graduate senior Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH), who was ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.05m; and Lightner, who took 10th place in the javelin throw with an effort covering 46.32m.
The RedStorm will have one last chance to qualify when they participate in the Harrison Dillard Twilight, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.
