Rio men finish 5th at Cedarville Invitational

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Rowen Gerlach had a runner-up finish among his three Top 10 showings, while Victor Day also had a trio of Top 10 performances and Hunter Blagg placed in the top four twice to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team at Saturday's Yellow Jacket Collegiate Outdoor Open hosted by Cedarville University.
Gerlach, a freshman from New Haven, W.Va., took second place in the shot put with an effort of 14.72m, while also placing sixth in the discus throw (43.54m) and seventh in the hammer throw (45.92m).
Day, a freshman from Pedro, Ohio, finished fourth in the triple jump (11.61m), eighth in the long jump (5.86m) and 10th in the high jump (1.65m).
Blagg, a sophomore from Pedro, Ohio, was third in the triple jump (11.62m) and fourth in the long jump (6.05m).
As a team, Rio Grande finished fifth in the field of 15 schools after accumulating 65 points.
Host Cedarville won the team title with 150.5 points, while Wittenberg University was second (133.5 pts.) and Wilmington College was third (75 pts.).
Rio Grande had 12 other Top 10 individual efforts and had one relay squad post a runner-up finish.
The other notable performances by the RedStorm included junior Jorden Williams (Springfield, OH), who placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:00.14 and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.83; freshman Garrett Fister (Harrodsburg, KY), who was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.24m and 10th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 19.10; junior Marshall Jackson (Zanesfield, OH), who placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.40m and seventh in the discus throw with a heave covering 43.42m; freshman Nick Knight (Proctorville, OH), who was seventh in the shot put with an effort of 13.10m; senior Haden Karshner (Circleville OH), who was eighth in both the hammer throw (45.02m) and the discus throw (43.16m); freshman Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), who was eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.53; junior Ryan Weber (Bidwell, OH), who was 10th in the shot put with a heave of 12.01m; and graduate senior Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH), who was 10th in the hammer throw with an effort of 44.56m.
Rio's 4x400 relay team - comprised of Science, Williams, freshman Teddy Jencson (Baltimore, OH) and freshman Jayden Dunlap (Gallipolis, OH) - finished second in a time of 3:38.88.
The RedStorm are scheduled to return to action on Friday with a portion of the team heading to the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Invitational and others going to Lee University's Flames Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn.
