Dishong earns first place finish for Rio men at Cumberlands

     WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Mason Dishong had a pair of Top 10 outings, including the University of Rio Grande's only win, to lead the efforts of the RedStorm men at the Gordon Bocock Invitational & Distance Festival hosted by the University of the Cumberlands.
     The two-day meet wrapped up on Saturday.
     Dishong, a junior from Reedsville, Ohio, won the javelin throw with an effort of 49.26m, while also placing 10th in the shot put with a heave of 12.08m.
     As a team, the RedStorm finished with 45 points to place sixth among the 16 competing teams.
     The University of Findlay won the team title with 219.5 points, with the host Patriots (130 pts.) and Lindsey Wilson College (110 pts.) rounding out the top three.
     Rio Grande had four other Top 5 performances at the meet.
     Junior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH) was the runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 47.06m; freshman Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH) placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:08.35; sophomore Marshall Jackson (Bellefontaine, OH) finished third in the shot put with a toss of 14.10m; and sophomore Skylar Gries (Williamsburg, OH), who was fourth in the decathlon with 5,456 points.
     Among those in the multi-event competition, Gries placed second in the javelin (43.27m), took third in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.45) and pole vault (4.40m), was fourth in the discus throw (34.07m), finished sixth in both the shot put (9.91m) and high jump (1.63m), placed seventh in the long jump (5.64m), was eighth in the 1,500-meter run (5:17.30), placed 12th in the 100-meter dash (12.32) and finished 16th in the 400-meter dash (58.21).
     Other Top 10 outing by those representing the RedStorm came from Lightner, who was sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.05; junior Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH), who placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 48.28m and ninth in the discus throw with an effort covering 40.10m; sophomore Danuel Persinger (Bidwell, OH), who finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:04.29 and ninth in the 800-meter run with a mark of 1:59.18; junior Haden Karshner (Circleville, OH), who was eighth in both the discus throw (43.10m) and hammer throw (44.68m); sophomore Matt Spetnagel (Chillicothe, OH), who placed 10th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:03.91; and junior Travis Hunt (New Paris, OH), who took 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.07m.
     Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Saturday at Ohio University's Cherry Blossom Invitational in Athens, Ohio.
