Gries picks up win for Rio men at Mt. St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Skylar Gries' win in the pole vault and Travis Hunt's runner-up performance in the triple jump helped the University of Rio Grande men post a fifth place showing in Saturday's College of Mt. St. Joseph Indoor Invitational at the Centennial Fieldhouse & Austin E. Knowlton Fitness Center.
Gries, a sophomore from Williamsburg, Ohio, cleared 14-2.50 to win the pole vault, while Hunt - a junior from New Paris, Ohio - grabbed second place in the triple jump with an effort covering 43-3.75.
Their collective outings contributed to the RedStorm's 43 points as a team and sixth place finish among the 14 competing schools.
Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) wwon the team title with 129 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Indiana University East's total of 61 points. Bluffton finished in third place with 60 points.
Rio had five other individual scoring outings during the course of Saturday's action.
Freshman Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH) led the list by finishing third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.10 and fifth in the long jump with an effort of 21-1.25; while freshman Hunter Blagg (Ironton, OH) was third in the pole vault after clearing 11'0"; junior Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH) was third in the weight throw with a heave of 47-03; and sophomore Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH) was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday in the River States Conference Indoor Championships at Logan High School in Logan, Ohio.
