Hunt leads Rio men at indoor opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Travis Hunt recorded a pair of top five showings to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team at their 2022-23 indoor opener - the Wittenberg Tiger Collegiate Opener - Saturday afternoon, at Steemer Fieldhouse.
Hunt, a junior from New Paris, Ohio, took second place in the triple jump with a leap of 13.15m and was fourth in the long jump with an effort of 6.39m. His mark in the triple jump was the second-best figure in program history.
Two others representing the RedStorm had a pair of Top 10 performances.
Sophomore Skylar Gries (Williamsburg, OH) was runner-up in the pole vault after clearing 4.32m - the third-best mark in program history - and was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.03.
Freshman Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH) was fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.09 and was 10th in the 200-meter dash after crossing in 23.24.
Other top 10 showings from Rio came from junior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH), who was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.57; sophomore Marshall Jackson (Bellefontaine, OH), who was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 13.71m; freshman Hunter Blagg (Ironton, OH), who was fifth in the pole vault at 3.42m; sophomore Danuel Persinger (Bidwell, OH), who finished sixth in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:34.05; freshman Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), who placed ninth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:03.47; and junior Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH), who took ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.38m.
Jenkins' finish was the third-best in program history.
The event was not team scored.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday at the Tiffin University Open.
