Rio's Montes, Pomossene, 4x800 relay reach finals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Rio Grande's Angel Montes and Mugisha Pomossene both qualified for the 3,000-meter race walk final, while the RedStorm's 4x800 relay team did the same during Thursday's opening round of action at the 69th NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship hosted by the Gainesville Sports Commission at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center at Celebration Pointe.
Montes, a freshman from Mexico, finished eighth in a time of 13:31.49, while Pomossene - a senior from Dayton, Ohio - placed 11th in a mark of 13:41.49. The top four finishers in each of the two heats, plus the four fastest remaining times, qualified for Friday's final at 11:15 a.m.
Two others representing the RedStorm in the event failed to advance. Freshman Nathan Ward (Galena, OH) finished 18th in a time of 15:29.28 and graduate senior Carter Lipscomb (West Union, WV) was disqualified.
The final in the event is slated for Friday at 11:15 a.m.
Rio's 4x800 relay squad qualified by finishing fifth in Thursday's preliminaries with a time of 7:38.66. The RedStorm's roster includes junior Ashton Beverly Chillicothe, OH), freshman Tyler Hill (Reedsville, OH), senior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH), Lipscomb, junior Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), freshman Moritz Seigel (Leipzig, Germany), freshman Jahfa Woodley (Trinada and Tobago) and sophomore John Young (Leroy, OH).
The 4x800 final is set for Friday at 6:25 p.m.
The RedStorm's 4x400 and Distance Medley relay teams failed to advance beyond Thursday's prelims.
The Distance Medley team finished 15th after crossing in 10:11.53, while the 4x400 unit was 27th in a time of 3:20.34.
The 4x400 roster included Beverly, senior Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH), Hill, Houston, sophomore Anthony Portis, Jr. (Huber Heights, OH), Science, freshman Noah Sileshi (Germany) and Woodley.
The DMR roster included Beverly, Houston, senior Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), Science, Seigel, Sileshi, Woodley and Young.
In addition to Montes and Pomossene participating in the race walk final, Friday's schedule also finds freshman Milan Tobiska (Czechia) competing in the long jump at 3 p.m.
Also on Friday, Science will run in the 800-meter run preliminaries at 3:30 p.m.
