Rio men's relay team sets new record, qualifies for NAIA meet

     ASHLAND, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande's men's distance medley relay team set a new school record and earned a spot in the upcoming NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championship during Saturday's Ashland Jud Logan Light Giver Invitational.
     The event was hosted by Ashland University at the Niss Athletic Center.
     The team - comprised of sophomore Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH), freshman John Young (Leroy, OH) and senior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH) - finished seventh in a time of 10:08.13.
     The foursome snapped the previous school record of 10:25.53, while also hitting the "B" qualifying standard for the national championship.
     Rio's alternate entry - which included freshman Wes Taylor (Cincinnati, OH), freshman Anthony Portis III (Huber Heights, OH), sophomore Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH) and freshman Duncan Kogei (Eldoret, Kenya) - finished 12th but also broke the previous school record with their time of 10:24.70.
     The RedStorm had one other Top 10 performance in the meet, which included athletes from all three divisions of the NCAA, as well as NAIA schools.
     Houston placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.78.
     Rio Grande is slated to return to action at the River States Conference Championship, which is set for Friday and Saturday at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
