RedStorm takes title at Last Chance Meet

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's track & field team cruised to a first place finish at the Rio Grande Last Chance Meet, which wrapped up its two-day run on Saturday afternoon at the Stockmeister Track & Field Complex.
A handful of athletes representing eight schools participated in the meet, which served as a last chance opportunity to qualify for the upcoming NAIA National Championships.
The event featured 13 events, 10 of which were scored.
The RedStorm tallied 55 points in the scored portion, while Indiana University Kokomo was second with 20 points and Thomas More University was third with 16 points.
Sophomore Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH), senior Cody Booth (New Philadelphia, OH) and sophomore Travis Hunt (New Paris, OH) led Rio's efforts with first-place performances.
Lightner won the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.61, while Booth took the 5,000-meter run after crossing in 15:07.41 and Hunt won the triple jump with an effort of 12.79m.
Lightner also placed fifth in the javelin throw with a toss of 43.02m.
Also representing the RedStorm was sophomore Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH), who was second in the high jump at 1.85m; sophomore Mason Dishong (Reedsville, OH), who captured third place in the javelin throw (45.71m) and sixth in the hammer throw (38.75m); freshman Eric Weber (Bidwell, OH), who was third in the hammer throw (47.19m) and eighth in the discus throw (39.54m); freshman Danuel Persinger (Bidwell, OH), who placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:15.65; graduate senior Daniel Everett (Fletcher, OH), who was fourth in the hammer throw with a heave of 44.16m; freshman Jason Springer (Circleville, OH), who was fourth in the 5,000-meter run at 17:10.27; freshman Triston Malmstrom (McArthur, OH), who was sixth in the javelin throw (30.05m) and ninth in the discus (36.99m); and sophomore Haden Karshner (Circleville, OH), who was seventh in the discus throw with an effort covering 40.74m.
Rio Grande's national qualifiers will return to action at the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sports Commission, May 25-27, at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium at Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala.
