RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Julian Vargas Talamantes came off the bench to score a pair of goals, while assisting on another, to lead No. 11-ranked Bethel (Ind.) University in a 4-1 win over the 22nd-ranked University of Rio Grande, Monday afternoon, in the final round of the RedStorm Classic at Evan E. Davis Field.
The Pilots improved to 2-1-1 with the win.
Rio Grande fell to 1-1-2 with the loss.
The RedStorm grabbed a 1-0 advantage with 19:05 left in the first half when junior Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) scored off of a touch from freshman Guilherme Hansen (Sao Paulo, Brazil) from the left side of the 18-yard box.
The lead was short-lived, though.
Bethel's Noe Ferreira blistered the rebound of a teammate's blocked shot from straightaway at the top of the 18 past Rio Grande freshman keeper Samy Hamou (Paris, France) for the tying marker with 15:30 left before the intermission.
Seven minutes later, Vargas Talamantes took advantage of a Rio defensive miscue and lofted a shot from 40 yards out that cleared the head of a retreating Hamou and into the goal for the go-ahead score. Diego Arrieta was credited with an assist on the play.
Less than a minute later, Vargas Talamantes scored on a penalty kick to give the Pilots a commanding 3-1 cushion.
That's how things stayed until Luca Canto scored off a touch by Vargas Talamantes with 7:52 remaining to set the final score.
Bethel finished with a 12-9 edge in shots overall and a 10-4 advantage in shots on frame.
The RedStorm did have nine of the 12 corner kick chances in the match.
Mathis Neuhaus recorded three saves in the win for BU.
Hamou stopped six shots in a losing cause for Rio Grande.
