Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - An aggressive second half approach by the University of Rio Grande produced a pair of second half goals and lifted the RedStorm to a 2-0 win over Shawnee State University, Saturday night, in River States Conference men's soccer play at a damp Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm, who were playing at home for the first time in more than a month, snapped a three-game losing slide and a five-game winless streak, improving to 2-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the RSC.
Shawnee State dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.
The Bears outshot Rio, 5-3, in a scoreless first half, but the RedStorm reversed course and used a 14-4 second half shot edge to its advantage.
Joe McInnes got Rio on the scoreboard just under 7-1/2 minutes into the second period, scoring from inside the 18-yard box on a crossing pass from right to left by Estevao Goncalves.
The RedStorm's second goal actually came just over two minutes after being forced to play a man down following a red card violation whistled against senior Scott Gray.
Tommy Munoz Salazar found the back of the net via a touch by Harry Walsh with 17:23 left in the contest to provide the insurance marker.
In addition to its 17-9 advantage in total shots, Rio Grande also enjoyed a 9-6 cushion in shots on frame and a whopping 9-1 edge in corner kick chances.
Matheus de Campos stopped all six of Shawnee State's shots on goal for Rio.
Eric Green recorded six saves as well in net for the Bears.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Thursday afternoon when it hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College in another RSC contest.
Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
