McInnes, Cam Orellana fuel RedStorm's rout of Red Wolves
Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande had 11 players on the pitch at all times during Saturday's River States Conference Men's Soccer quarterfinal round match with Indiana University East.
But it would be easy to see why the Red Wolves were convinced that the RedStorm was a two-man machine.
Joe McInnes scored four goals, while Benjamin Cam Orellana had one goal and four assists in Rio's lopsided 11-0 win at sun-splashed Evan E. Davis Field.
The second-seeded and sixth-ranked RedStorm improved to 13-1-2 with the victory, while also punching a ticket to Wednesday's semifinal round and a matchup with No. 3 seed Point Park University.
The Pioneers defeated sixth-seeded Midway University in one of Saturday's other quarterfinal matches.
Seventh-seeded IU East, which dropped an 11-1 decision to Rio in their regular season matchup, finished its season at 5-13-1.
The Red Wolves managed just one shot in the opening half and trailed 7-0 at the intermission.
Rio's two-man hammer was a big reason why.
McInnes, a senior from Airdrie, Scotland netted three of his four scores in the opening 45 minutes and Cam Orellana - a senior from Santiago, Chile - assisted on two of the markers.
Cam Orellana, who also scored his lone goal in the first half, recorded his remaining assists on a pair of first half goals by freshman Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
Freshman Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) contributed an unassisted goal in the first half, while graduate senior Julian Fally (Vienna, Austria) had an assist on the game's first goal by McInnes.
Fally also had the assist on McInnes' final tally of the day just under nine minutes into the second half, while Munoz Salazar scored off of a touch by sophomore Luis Jesse (Munich, Germany) with 5:00 remaining and freshman Keagan Daniels (Rio Grande, OH) scored on a penalty kick with 1:05 left to play.
Rio's final goal came as a result of an own goal by the Red Wolves with three seconds left.
The RedStorm finished with a 36-3 advantage in overall shots and a 22-2 cushion in shots on goal.
Rio also had 13 of the 16 corner kick opportunities in the match.
Graduate senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) started in goal for Rio and earned the win, while senior Oton Merin Torro (Concentaina, Spain) recorded a pair of saves over the final 45 minutes to perserve the shutout.
Alex Visscher started and took the loss in goal for IU East. He finished with six saves.
Peter Lamprou replaced Visscher for the second half and was credited with four saves.
Rio Grande's semifinal set with Point Park on Wednesday is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
