Rio Grande Sports Information
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Benjamin Cam Orellana scored one goal and assisted on another as the University of Rio Grande built a commanding lead and then held on late for a 3-2 win over Oakland City University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's soccer action at Aigner Field.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll, improved to 11-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the RSC with the victory.
The host Mighty Oaks slipped to 6-8-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league play.
Cam Orellana, a senior from Santiago, Chile, scored Rio's first goal with 16:53 left in the opening half and assisted on a marker by graduate senior Julian Fally (Vienna, Austria) just under four minutes into the second stanza to give the RedStorm a 3-0 cushion.
Oakland City made things interesting, though, by scoring a pair of goals in a span of just 1:46 to take a big chunk out of the deficit with just over 16 minutes to play.
Evan Reape had the first marker - off a touch by Carlos Juarez Doming - with 18:05 remaining and Drake Dickens followed with another score shortly thereafter off an assist by Periale Noutaha.
The two goals marked the first time all season that Rio Grande surrendered multiple scores in a single game. It also snapped the RedStorm's streak of six consecutive shutouts.
After closing the gap to one, the Mighty Oaks managed just one other shot on frame, but Rio graduate senior net-minder Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) stopped Adam Dimba's would-be game-tying try with 8:57 left to play.
The RedStorm, who also got an unassisted goal by freshman Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England) in the closing moments of the first half, finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots overall - including 10-0 in the first half - and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
Rio also had a 5-3 cushion in corner kick chances.
de Campos had one save in the winning effort for the RedStorm.
Taylor Harmon recorded six stops in goal for Oakland City.
Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday night when it hosts Point Park University in its regular season finale at Evan E. Davis Field.
Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
