Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Although post-game fireworks were scheduled to follow their meeting with Indiana University-Purdue University-Columbus on Saturday night, the University of Rio Grande men's soccer team couldn't help but offer up an explosion of their own before the illumination of the skies over the land of Bob Evans.
The RedStorm scored twice in the first 8-1/2 minutes and never looked back, rolling to an 11-0 rout of the Crimson Pride in River States Conference play at Evan E. Davis Field.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll, improved to 10-1-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the league with the victory.
IUPUC, in its first year as a member of the conference, fell to 6-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the RSC.
Rio Grande overwhelmed the Crimson Pride from the outset, outshooting its guests 24-0 in the opening half and 37-4 for the contest altogether.
The RedStorm led 7-0 at the intermission, with four of the markers coming on rebound shots after IUPUC net-minder Jacob Kasarda had stopped an initial attempt by the home team.
Freshman Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had all three of his goals in the first half barrage, including two of the four rebound scores. He also had the game's initial score - off an assist by senior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) - just 4:47 into the match.
Cam Orellana netted the final goal of the half with 6:43 remaining before the break.
Sophomore Justin Jimenez (Alajuela, Costa Rica) had an assist on a marker by senior Joe McInnes (Airdrie, Scotland) and later had a rebound score of his own, while graduate senior Julian Fally (Vienna, Austria) was responsible for the remaining first half tally.
McInnes scored again, just over 3-1/2 minutes into the second stanza, off an assist by freshman Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England), while O'Donnell himself scored two of Rio's final three goals.
Freshman Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) was credited with the assist on O'Donnell's first score with 26:29 left to play, before scoring a goal of his own via a touch from Cam Orellana with 14:38 remaining in the match.
O'Donnell's second score was unassisted and came just 2:11 later to set the final score.
Rio Grande's huge advantage in overall shots, also included a 20-1 edge in shots on frame.
The RedStorm, who were coming off a scoreless draw at rival West Virginia University-Tech on Thursday night, also had all five corner kick chances in the contest.
Graduate senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) recorded one save in goal for Rio Grande, which posted its sixth straight shutout effort defensively.
Kasarda had nine stops in the loss for the Crimson Pride.
Rio Grande returns to action Oct. 21 when it travels to Oakland City University. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EST.
The RedStorm had rescheduled an earlier postponement at the University of the Cumberlands for Wednesday night, but the match has now been canceled.
