Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - By the time that a heavy rain began falling in the second half of Thursday night's men's soccer match between the University of Rio Grande and Midway University, the RedStorm was already well into the process of turning off the Eagles' offensive water.
Head coach Scott Morrissey's squad limited its guests to just one shot for the entire contest and cruised to a 3-0 win in River States Conference play at Evan E. Davis Field.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll, pushed its record to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the RSC with the victory.
Midway slipped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league play as a result of the loss.
The Eagles' lone shot in the match came with 35:33 left to play when Jacob Pollak's left wing attempt sailed high over the goal.
By that time, though, Rio found itself enjoying a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Senior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) scored what proved to be the only goal the RedStorm would need on a penalty kick just under 16-1/2 minutes into the contest.
The lead then doubled with 13:45 remaining before the intermission when sophomore Altan Sayar (Kreuzlingen, Switzerland) scored off of a crossing pass by freshman Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) from right to left inside the 18-yard box.
Kawata also had the assist on Rio's final goal of the night - a score by freshman Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) with 26:10 left to play.
Rio Grande finished with a 35-1 advantage in shots, including 18-0 in shots on goal, and had all 10 corner kick chances in the contest.
Graduate senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) had the easiest of clean sheets in goal for the RedStorm.
Connor Vincent had 14 saves in a losing cause for Midway.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday night when its hosts Ohio Christian University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
