RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Benjamin Cam Orellana scored three goals and assisted on three others, leading the University of Rio Grande in an 11-1 rout of Indiana University East, Saturday night, in River States Conference men's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
Three other players scored two goals each in the win for the RedStorm (5-1-1, 2-0 RSC), who are ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll.
IU East dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss.
Cam Orellana, a senior from Santiago, Chile had two of his three markers in the first half as Rio Grande built a lopsided 7-0 halftime lead.
Senior Joe McInnes (Airdrie, Scotland), along with the freshman duo of Keagan Daniels (Rio Grande, Ohio) and Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England) scored one goal in each half for the RedStorm, who finished with an overwhelming 45-7 cushion in shots overall, a 26-6 advantage in shots on goal and 11 of the game's 12 corner kick chances.
It was McInnes who gave Rio a lead it would never relinquish, scoring on a header off of a touch by Cam Orellana just 2:42 into the contest.
Cam Orellana scored 8-1/2 minutes and then added another goal a little more than 8-1/2 after that to make it 3-0. Sophomore Justin Jimenez (Sao Paulo, Brazil) assisted on the second of the two goals.
Graduate senior Julian Fally's (Vienna, Austria) goal via a feed from junior Diego Martinez (Santiago, Chile) with 16:44 left before halftime made it 4-0, while a barrage of goals late in the opening stanza - three within a span of 75 seconds, in fact - turned the match into a laugher.
Daniels had the first of the three with 2:56 left before the break, with Fally earning credit for the assist. O'Donnell scored unassisted just 58 seconds later and sophomore Theo Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also had an unassisted marker 17 seconds after that to set the halftime score.
IU East avoided a shutout when Eddie Carrizalez played the rebound of a missed shot by teammate Tristan Thomas and pushed a shot past Rio senior reserve net-minder Oton Merin Torro with 29:42 remaining, but the RedStorm went on to add four more goals to set the final score.
Cam Orellana assisted on McInnes' second goal just under two minutes later, while also aiding on O'Donnell's second marker with 14:13 left to play to make it 9-1.
Cam Orellana secured his hat trick by scoring with 7:00 showing on the clock, while Daniels' second goal - off a touch by freshman Rafael Kawata (Sao Paulo, Brazil) - with 3:41 remaining set the final score.
Graduate senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) started and got the win in goal for the RedStorm, stopping a pair of shots in a first half clean sheet.
Merin Torro played the second half in net for Rio and also had two saves.
Alex Visscher began the night in goal for the Red Wolves and recorded three saves before giving way to Peter Lamprou at the intermission. Lamprou was credited with 10 saves.
Rio Grande returns to action next Thursday when it hosts Midway University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
