RedStorm men dominate in shutout of Brescia

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The final score of Saturday afternoon's River States Conference men's soccer matchup between the University of Rio Grande and Brescia University was somewhat misleading.
The RedStorm's 2-0 win over the Bearcats at Evan E. Davis Field might have one thinking the game was tightly-contested, but a dive into the final numbers proved otherwise.
Head coach Scott Morrissey's squad outshot their guests, 30-2 overall and 10-0 in shots on goal.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 21 in the most recent NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll, also all eight of the game's corner kick opportunities.
The RedStorm improved to 12-3-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the RSC, tying WVU-Tech for the league's regular season championship.
Rio Grande will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, though, based on a goals conceded tie-breaker with the Golden Bears and will receive a first round bye in the tourney, which begins next Saturday.
Sophomore Gabriel Silva (Sao Luis, Brazil) scored what proved to be the only goal Rio would need just 12:17 into the match off of a touch by junior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile).
That's how things stayed until junior Osvaldo Pereria (Campo Grande, Brazil) tacked on an unassisted marker with 8:19 left to play to set the final score.
Senior Daniel Merino Correa (Madrdi, Spain) never faced a shot en route to the win in goal for the RedStorm.
Finn Martin went the distance in net for Brescia and recorded eight saves.
The two teams could meet again, with Rio Grande entertaining the Brescia-Indiana East winner in the semifinals of the RSC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 9, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
