PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Gabriel Silva scored one goal and assisted on another as the University of Rio Grande dominated from the outset and posted a 5-0 win over Point Park University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's soccer action at Highmark Stadium.
Silva, a sophomore from Sao Luis, Brazil, was one of five different players who scored goals for the 22nd-ranked RedStorm, which improved to 10-3-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the RSC with the victory.
Point Park dropped to 6-8-3 overall and 4-2-2 in league play.
The Pioneers were forced to play the final 49-plus minutes a man down after Jaime Rodriguez was issued a red card violation for rough play, but Rio Grande was already well on its way to controlling the contest.
The RedStorm outshot their hosts, 15-2, in the opening half en route to a 24-4 advantage for the game.
Rio, which had a 12-2 edge in shots on goal, also had all but one of the game's 16 corner kick chances.
The lone goal of the opening half came with just under 20 minutes gone when junior Vilius Labutis (Ireland) scored off of a corner kick by freshman Justin Jimenez (Costa Rica).
The RedStorm then put things on ice by scoring three times in a span of 9-1/2 minutes.
Freshman Altan Sayar (Switzerland) scored off a touch by Silva with 31:30 left to play and Silva added his goal - an unassisted marker - with 23:32 remaining to make it 3-0.
Just under a minute-and-a-half later, junior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) found the back of the net off a crossing pass from the right wing by junior Osvaldo Pereria (Campo Grande, Brazil).
Freshman Dean Bregenzer (Switzerland) closed the scoring with 10:16 remaining, netting a goal off an assist by freshman Marco Kramer.
Senior keeper Daniel Merino Correa (Madrid, Spain) had two saves in a clean sheet effort for Rio Grande.
Max Davila started in goal for PPU and recorded seven saves in his just under 74 minutes of action. Sean O'Hea surrended the final goal and did not record a save while finishing up.
Rio Grande returns to action next Thursday when it hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in a 7 p.m. kick at Evan E. Davis Field.
