     PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Rio Grande jumped to a 4-0 lead just over 11-1/2 minutes into the match and cruised to an 8-0 win over Carlow University, Thursday evening, in River States Conference men's soccer action at Highmark Stadium.
     The 22nd-ranked RedStorm improved to 9-3-2 overall and 5-0-1 in conference play, maintaing their share of the lead in the RSC standings in the process.
     Carlow, which is leaving the league at the end of the current school year, slipped to 2-12-1 overall and 1-6-0 in league play with the loss.
     The Celtics fell to 0-7 in their all-time meetings against Rio, while being outscored 97-0 over the period.
     Junior Osvaldo Pereria (Campo Grande, Brazil) scored two of the four early goals - one off a shot from just outside the 18-yard box with 10:40 gone in the opening half and the other on a penalty kick just 56 seconds later.
     Junior Vilius Labutis (Ireland) got the scoring underway with a header off a touch by junior Diego Montenegro (Santiago, Chile) a little less than 3-1/2 minutes into the match, while sophomore Gabriel Silva (Sao Luis, Brazil) made it 2-0 just under 3-1/2 minutes later with a penalty kick of his own.
     Labutis assisted on a goal by freshman Altan Sayar (Switzerland) with 7:03 remaining in the first half to give the RedStorm its 5-0 lead at the intermission.
     Freshman Dean Bregenzer (Switzerland) tacked on a pair of unassisted second half markers - the first with 26:19 left to play and the other off the rebound of shot that hit the crossbar with 8:01 remaining - while junior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) added an unassisted goal of his own with 4:58 left on a then running clock to set the final score.
     Rio Grande finished with a 44-3 advantage in total shots, a 24-0 cushion in shots on frame and a 9-0 edge in corner kick opportunities.
     Junior Oton Merin Torro (Spain) went the distance in goal for the RedStorm.
     Carlow net-minder Kevin Garcia was credited with 15 saves in a losing cause.
     Rio Grande finishes it weekend road swing to the Steel City with a showdown against Point Park University - also at Highmark Stadium - on Saturday at 1 p.m.
