RedStorm goes 1-3 at Ruck the Rock

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The University of Rio Grande had a tough day on Saturday, posting a 1-3 record in the Ruck the Rock 7's Tournament at Manchester Meadows Park.
The RedStorm, who were competing in the Premier Division, went 0-2 in pool play before splitting a pair of matches in the consolation bracket to finish in 11th place.
Head coach Brad Sandig's team, which slipped to 4-6 in 7's play, lost to Walsh University (10-7) and the University of Notre Dame (24-10) in pool action before dropping a 33-7 decision to Southern Virginia University in consolation play.
The RedStorm did salvage a win by closing the day with a 49-7 rout of Lander (SC) University.
A successful try by sophomore Luke Turner (Eastbourne, England) and a conversion kick by junior Thibault Carrere (Dax, Landes, France) gave Rio a 7-5 halftime lead against Walsh, but the RedStorm failed to score after the intermission.
Senior Will Spencer (Hemel Hempstead, England) had the RedStorm's lone first half score against Notre Dame, while a try by sophomore Jacob Griffin (Surrey, England) closed out the scoring.
Senior Mikey Grice (England) had the try and conversion for Rio in the loss to Southern Virginia, while Carrere had three tries and six conversions in the rout of Lander.
Turner, Grice, junior Hodari Davis (Gaithersburg, MD) and senior Zolen Walker (Madison, WI) also had successful tries in the win, while Grice also tacked on a conversion.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action next Saturday at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish 7's Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
