Rugby completes perfect regular season

GAMBIER, Ohio - Solomone Ahoia and Dean Brits had two successful tries each helping the University of Rio Grande men's rugby team wrap up an unbeaten regular season with a 58-19 rout of Kenyon College, Saturday afternoon, in Allegheny Rugby Union action at the Kenyon Rugby Pitch.
The RedStorm improved to 7-0 with the victory, nailing down the top seed in the upcoming ARU playoffs.
Kenyon finished its season at 2-5.
The Lords connected on a penalty goal in the opening five minutes of the match to take a 3-0 lead, but Rio countered with the first successful try of the season by senior Caden Harden (Oak Hill, OH) and never trailed again.
The RedStorm went on to take a 39-13 advantage at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.
Ahoia, a freshman from Lawndale, Calif., and Brits - a freshman from Still Bay, South Africa - were Rio's only multiple scorers.
In addition to Harden, the RedStorm also had tries by sophomore Mason Dishong (Reedsville, OH) and the freshman quartet of Che Spiotti (Charlotte, NC), Devon Scriber (Colorado Springs, CO), Lazarus Ratuniyaravu (Everett, WA) and William Brewster (Piketon, OH).
Harden also added a first half convert, while freshman Ben Kelly (Basinstoke, England) had three of his own after the break.
"We came out of the gates making tackle after tackle on a wet and muddy pitch. It was a physical game with tough conditions," said Rio Grande head coach Corey Momsen. "Kenyon worked the ball well to the edges and was solid on its goal line defense, holding up two potential tries to turn the ball over. We kept to their structure and worked on the basics toward preparing for the playoffs this weekend."
Momsen also added his thanks for a great turnout by family members and The Archon Fraternity Alumni, who tailgated throughout the day.
Saturday's ARU semifinals feature the top-seeded RedStorm and No. 4 seed Slippery Rock, Pa. (5-2) in the 1 p.m. opener, while No. 2 seed Robert Morris (5-1-1) and third-seeded Franciscan (5-1-1) tangle in the 3 p.m. contest.
Saturday's winners will meet in the championship on Sunday at 3 p.m.
All three playoff contests will take place at Rio's Red Valley Pitch.
