Rio men tie for 3rd at UNOH Kickoff

THOMSON, Ga. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team finished in a tie for third place following Tuesday's final round of the UNOH Southern Kickoff.
The 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Northwestern Ohio, took place at the Belle Meade Country Club.
The RedStorm tied the host Racers at 53-over par 917.
Truett McConnell (Ga.) University finished atop the nine-team field at 37-over par 901, while Savannah College of Arts & Design - Atlanta was second at 45-over 909.
SCAD Atlanta's Brian Berta took medalist honors as an individual at 4-over par 220.
Rio Grande's top performance came from freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), who finished seventh at 11-over par 227. He was only two shots off of the lead following the second round, but carded an 8-over 80 over the final 18 holes.
Senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain) also cracked the Top 10 for the RedStorm, taking 10th place at 15-over par 231. He also struggled in the final round, carding a 10-over 82.
Also representing Rio was freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), who was 18th at 18-over par 234, and the duo of junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain) and freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who tied for 22nd place at 20-over par 236.
Two other players from Rio Grande participated as individuals in the 53-player field.
Junior Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV) and freshman Floris Everwijn (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) were both part of a four-way tie for 36th place at 34-over 250.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Lawrence Tech University Spring Invitational in Shepherdsville, Ky.
