Rio men tie for sixth at Whistling Straits

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place following Tuesday's final round of the Whistling Straits Classic hosted by Lawrence Tech (Mich.) University at Whistling Straits Golf Course.
The RedStorm, who were in fifth place at the close of the opening round, finished at 68-over par 644, tying the University of Pikeville for sixth place in the 36-hole, 12-team event.
Taylor University won the team championship at 32-over par 608, while the University of Wisconsin-Parkside was second at 45-over 621 and Grace (Ind.) College took third at 55-over 631.
Rio Grande's top individual outing came from senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for ninth place at 12-over 156. He finished at 6-over 78 in both rounds.
The RedStorm's only other player to finish in the Top 20 was freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), who tied for 20th at 17-over 161.
Also representing Rio was junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who was part of a three-way tie for 20th place at 18-over 162; freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who was among three players tied for 31st place at 21-over 165; and freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), who was among the three-way logjam for 34th place at 22-over par 166.
Pikeville's Kaeden Anderson took medalist honors among the 63 competitors with a 5-over par total of 149.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action next Monday and Tuesday when it closes out the Fall portion of its schedule at the Kentucky Christian Invitational in Olive Hill, Ky.
