Rio golfers in full swing at Milligan, Shawnee State

     JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The University of Rio Grande varsity men's golf team posted a ninth-place finish following Tuesday's final round of the East Tennessee Collegiate at the Johnson City Country Club.
     The RedStorm followed up a 10-over par score of 298 on Monday with an even-par 288 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 10-over par 586.
     The University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) breezed to the team title by finishing among the 14 competing squads at 23-under par 553, while Johnson (Tenn.) University was second at 14-under 562 and Walters State (Tenn.) Community College took third at 566.
     Walters State's Maddox Butler took medalist honors by carding a 36-hole total of 13-under par 131.
     Rio Grande's top individual showing came from junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who was among a trio of players who tied for 11th place at 2-under par 142. Gil Perez had his best round as a collegian on day two with a 5-under par score of 67.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), who was six players tied for 14th place at 1-under 143; freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), who was among a quartet of players who tied for 36th place at 4-over 148; senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who was among three players tied for 52nd place at 9-over par 153; and freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who was part of a three-way deadlock for 63rd place at 16-over 160.
     Rio Grande also placed a pair of reserve teams in the 19-team Roger Merb Invitational hosted by Shawnee State University, Monday and Tuesday, at the Elks Country Club in McDermott, Ohio.
     The RedStorm "B" entry finished in 10th place at 49-over par 625, while the "C" team was 13th at 57-over 633.
     West Virginia University Tech "A" won the event with with a 36-hole total of 7-over par 583, edging Georgetown (Ky.) College by one shot and host Shawnee State's "A" entry by five shots.
     Tech's Alvaro Iglesias and Georgetown's Christian Clements tied at the top of the leaderboard with a 5-under 139.
     Freshman Floris Everwijn (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) had the top score for Rio "B", finishing as one of six players tied for 17th place at 6-over par 150, while the top scores for the RedStorm "C" squad came from junior Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV), freshman Valerio De Angelis (Rome, Italy) and freshman Wyatt McCune (Coolville, OH), all of whom finished in the five-way tie for 40th place at 12-over 156.
     Also competing for Rio "B" was freshman Joel Jepson (Norrtalje, Sweden), who was among a trio of players tied for 37th place at 11-over 155; sophomore Keltin Robinson (Peebles, OH) and freshman Enrique Cuevas (Malaga, Spain), both of whom were part of a three-way deadlock for 55th place at 16-over par 160; and freshman Zarik Black (Seymour, IN), who was among three players tied for 61st place at 17-over 161.
     For the RedStorm "C" entry, freshmnan Hayden Reynolds (Vinton, OH) was part of the four-way tie for 68th place at 21-over par 165 and freshman Deo Alvarez (Veracruz, Mexico) was one of two players tied for 74th place at 23-over par 167.
     Rio Grande's varsity squad returns to action on Monday as part of the River States Conference Fall Preview at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va.
     The RedStorm's reserve will return to the course on Monday, Oct. 27, at the Kentucky Christian Invitational in Olive Hill, Ky.
