RedStorm finish third in season opener

     MUNCIE, Ind. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team opened their 2025 fall schedule by recording a third place finish in Friday's Delaware Country Club Shootout hosted by Indiana University East.
     The RedStorm finished with a 36-hole total of 26-over par 586.
     Host IU East won the event by finishing at 14-over 574, while Elmhurst University was second at 21-over 581.
     Elmhurst's Bo Smith took medalist honors by carding a 1-under par 139 for the day.
     Rio Grande's top individual outing came from freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), who tied for fifth place at 5-over par 145.
     Also representing the RedStorm was senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for seventh at 6-over 146; freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who was among four players tied for 11th at 9-over par 149; junior Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who tied for 20th place at 13-over 153; and freshman Floris Everwijn (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), who tied for 22nd place at 14-over par 154.
     Three other Rio golfers competed as individuals.
     Freshman Joel Jepson (Norrtalje, Sweden) finished in a tie for 26th place at 17-over par 157; freshman Enrique Cuevas (Malaga, Spain) was among four players tied for 28th place at 19-over par 159; and freshman Wyatt McCune (Coolville, OH) was 33rd after carding a 29-over par 169.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Monday when its reserve squad participates in the Alice Lloyd College Fall Invitational in Prestonsburg, Ky.
     The RedStorm varsity team will next be in action at the Milligan University Invitational, Sept. 22 and 23, in Johnson City, Tenn.
