Portilla, RedStorm finish 4th in RSC Championship

     DANIELS, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande closed out its 2024-25 schedule with a fourth place finish in the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship.
     The 54-hole tournament concluded its three-day run on Tuesday at The Resort at Glade Springs.
     The RedStorm finished at 57-over par 921, three shots behind third-place finisher Oakland City University.
     Midway University rallied on the final hole to upend host West Virginia University-Tech for the team title - its fourth in five years - and a berth in the NAIA National Championship.
     The Eagles carded a 43-over par 907 and finished two shots clear of the Golden Bears.
     Medalist honors for the low score as an individual went to Oakland City University's Leo Molino, who finished at 4-over par 220. He defeated his OCU teammate, Jack Dolan, by one shot.
     Rio Grande's top individual showing came from junior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who finished in a tie for fourth place at 9-over par 225.
     Portilla's 1-over par 73 in Tuesday's final round tied for the third-best score of the day.
     Also representing the RedStorm in the tourney was senior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Colombia), who finished as part of a three-way tie for 10th at 12-over 228 after shooting Tuesday's low round of 1-under 71; sophomore Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who slipped from third place after the second round to 13th after carding a 13-over par 229; sophomore Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV), who placed 35th with a 28-over 244; and freshman Ryan Laudermilt (Racine, OH), who tied for 36th place at 29-over 245.
     Molino swept the major awards as the Golfer and Newcomer of the Year, as well as the tournament's individual medalist.
     Midway's Otis Smith swept the Coach of the Year awards in golf, adding the men's award to his award from the women's tournament last week.
