RedStorm goes 1-2 in Gibson Bay Match Play

RICHMOND, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf rebounded from a pair of losses on Monday with a Tuesday morning triumph on the final day of Gibson Bay Match Play at the Gibson Bay Golf Course.
The RedStorm posted a 3-2 win over Georgetown (Ky.) College after opening the event with a 3-2 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) University on Monday morning and then later falling to the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) by a 4.5-0.5 tally.
The 1-2 record left head coach Lauren Lee's squad in seventh-place among the eight participating teams.
In the win over Georgetown, Rio's victories came from junior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who defeated Carter Zutterman 4 & 3; senior Nicolas Gonzales (Medellin, Columbia), who topped Christian Clements 2-Up; and sophomore Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico), who a birdied the third playoff hole for a win over Laine Schulten.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain) lost 5 & 3 to the Tigers' Seth Shelley, while freshman Eliseo Martinez (Malaga, Spain) fell 2-Up to Evan Coffey.
The matches with both Campbellsville and Cumberlands were close throughout and came down to that last match.
Against Campbellsville, the RedStorm got wins by Baro Rosas over Manu Garcia (6 & 5) and Gonzalez over Stephen Perry (2-Up). Portilla lost to Quentin Boczmak 3 & 1, Gil Perez fell to Carson Beckham 1-Up and Martinez lost to Jagger Clinton McBride 4 & 2.
Portilla tied Eli Fischer for Rio's only non-loss against Cumberlands.
Gil Perez lost 5 & 4 to Theo Anderson, Baro Rosas fell 1-Up to Jaime Crispi, Gonzalez lost a 2-Up decision to Pedro Alonzo-Morgado and Martinez fell to Saran Jantrait 2-Up.
Gil Perez, against both Campbellsville and Gerogetown, made an impressive comeback bid from 5 down but, unfortunately, couldn't quite complete the effort.
Rio Grande will close out its Fall schedule Oct. 28 and 29 at the Firehawk Invitational in Athens, Ala.
