Rio men claim 5th place at LTU Collegiate Kickoff

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team posted a fifth-place finish in the LTU Collegiate Kickoff, which wrapped up its two-day run on Wednesday at the Crystal Mountain Resort.
The RedStorm moved up two spots in the final standings on Wednesday after a disastrous 36-hole opening round at the resort's par-71 Betsie Valley course.
The final round of the 54-hole event was played on the par-72 Mountain Ridge course.
Head coach Lauren Lee's club, which was among the schools receiving votes in the preseason NAIA coaches' poll and was coming off a victory at the Indiana East Fall Invite last week, finished at 82-over par.
Rio, which was 35-over par after Tuesday's first round, ended up fifth in the 11-team field at 82-over 946.
Host Lawrence Tech University's "A" entry took the team title at 47-over par 911. Lake Superior State was second at 60-over 924, while IU East finished third at 77-over 941.
Liam McEvoy from the Lawrence Tech "A" team took medalist honors by carding a 6-under par 210. IU East's Sam Firebaugh and Martin Wing from Lawrence Tech "A" were a distant second at 6-over par 222.
Rio Grande's top individual performances came from sophomore Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico), who finished as part of a four-way tie for 11th place at 19-over par 235.
Also representing the RedStorm was junior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain) and sophomore Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who were part of a three-way tie for 19th place at 21-over 237; sophomore Connor Ingles (New Haven, WV) and senior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who tied for 22nd place at 22-over 238; and freshman Fernando Cirajas (Valladolid, Spain), who finished in 48th place at 35-over 251.
Ingels was participating as an individual.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action next Monday and Tuesday with its varsity team at the Blue Raider Fall Classic hosted by Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. and the reserve squad playing in the Alice Lloyd College Fall Invite in Prestonsburg, Ky.
