RedStorm men 26th after first round of NAIA nationals

DALTON, Ga. - The University of Rio Grande sits in a tie for 26th place following Tuesday's opening round of the 72nd Annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at the Dalton Golf and Country Club.
The RedStorm fired a 32-over par 320 and sits 10 shots outside the cutline, while Keiser (Fla.) University leads the 30-team field after carding a 3-over par total of 291.
Following Wednesday's second round of play, the field will be reduced to the top 15 teams (plus ties) and six individuals who have not already made the cut with their teams (plus ties).
Wednesday's second round is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. EDT. The RedStorm will tee off No. 1 starting at 7:40 a.m.
Freshman Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico) led Rio Grande on Tuesday with a 7-over par 79 and is tied for 83rd place, while junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia) and senior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH) each finished with an 8-over par 80 and are tied for 96th place.
Also representing the RedStorm are sophomore Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain) and freshman Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), both of whom carded a 9-over par 81 and are tied for 112th place.
Bryson Beaver of WVU Tech, who is participating as an individual as the RSC Tournament medalist, put together a solid opening round including two birdies and 10 pars on his way to a 5-over 77 to put himself in a tie for 60th in the 156-player field.
