Rio men claim KCU Spring Invitational title

OLIVE HILL, Ky. The University of Rio Grande men's golf team recorded a first place finish, while the RedStorm "B" team took runner-up honors in the Kentucky Christian University Spring Invitational, which wrapped up its two-day run on Tuesday at Hidden Cove Golf Club.
The RedStorm "A" team finished at 25-over par 601, while the "B" unit was second at 53-over 629. Alice Lloyd College was third at 81-over par 657.
Rio Grande senior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH) finished first individually at 1-under par 143, topping his freshman teammate, Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico) by six shots.
The top score from the RedStorm "B" team came from Yianni Giakoumakis, (Vancouver, B.C., Canada) who finished third overall at 8-over par 152.
Other players for the Rio "A" team were freshman Juan Carlos Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain) who tied for fourth place at 10-over par 154; sophomore Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for seventh at 14-over 158; and junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who was 15-over par at 159.
Also representing the RedStorm "B" unit was freshman Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV), who tied for fourth at 10-over par 154; freshman Jorge Del Solar (Chochabomba, Bolivia), who tied for seventh at 14-over par 158; sophomore Jacob Smeeks (Belpre, OH), who placed 11th at 21-over par 165; and sophomore Tanner Lisle (Racine, OH), who tied for 15th at 37-over 181.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday in the opening round of the Pioneer Classic hosted by Marietta College at the Lakeside Golf Club in Beverly, Ohio.
