RedStorm men take 2nd in Blue Devil Classic

WEST BRANCH, Mich. - Rodrigo Portilla posted a second place finish individually and led the University of Rio Grande men's golf team to a second place finish in the Lawrence Tech University Blue Devil Classic, which wrapped up its two-day run on Tuesday at The Nightmare and The Dream Golf Courses.
Portilla, a sophomore from Sevilla, Spain, finished with a 54-hole total of 7-over par 223, including a 2-over par 74 in Tuesday's final round.
He finished seven shots behind medalist Bruno Vicente from host Lawrence Tech University, who followed up an even-par 72 in Monday's second round with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils also claimed the team crown with a score of 25-over par 899.
Rio Grande, finished as the runner-up at 52-over par 926, while Indiana University East was third at 933. The RedStorm and the Red Wolves tied for first in last week's River States Conference Fall Preview, with IUE winning in a one-hole playoff.
Also representing the RedStorm in the tourney was freshman Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico), who finished tied for sixth in the 54-player field at 14-over par 230; senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), who took 15th place at 21-over 237; junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who tied for 25th place at 27-over 243; and senior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH), who finished at 28-over 244 for a tie for 27th place.
Rio Grande returns to action Oct. 23-24 at the Kohler Collegiate Classic in Kohler, Wis.
