Rio men tie for 1st in RSC Preview, fall in sudden death playoff

DANIELS, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande and Indiana University East finished in a tie for first place following Tuesday's final round of the 2023 River States Conference Men's Golf Fall Preview at Glade Springs Resort.
The RedStorm and the Red Wolves each finished with a 32-over par team score of 608 over the course of 36 holes of regulation play.
Rio Grande, which took a one shot lead into the final round, lost to IU East on the first sudden death playoff hole to decide the champion. The Red Wolves finished at even on the hole, while the RedStorm was one shot over.
Host West Virginia University-Tech took third place among the 12 competing schools at 34-over par 610.
Individually, Hayden Williamson of Indiana University Kokomo took medalist honors after winning in a playoff over Jack Bedell of Midway University. Both finished regulation play at 3-over par 147.
Williamson made par on the playoff hole, while Bedell made double bogey. IU East's Jake Miller was third at 5-over par 149.
Rio Grande had two players finish in the Top 10 of the 66-player field, with junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia) tying for fourth place at 6-over par 150 and sophomore Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain) tying for sixth place at 7over par 151.
Also representing the RedStorm were senior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH), who was among four players tied for 14th place at 10-over par 154; and the duo of freshman Alfonso Baro Rosas (Cancun, Mexico) and senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), both of whom tied for 19th place at 12-over 156.
Rio freshman Magnus Fabian (Stuttgart, Germany) competed as an individual and was among a trio of golfers who tied for 54th place at 25-over par 169.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to play next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, at the Blue Devil Classic hosted by Lawrence Tech University in West Branch, Mich.
