Rio men finish 8th at Cumberland, ALC tourneys

     MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. - The University of Rio Grande varsity men's golf team posted an eighth-place finish in the 54-hole Phoenix Invitational, which wrapped up its two-day run on Tuesday at the Pine Creek Golf Course.
     The event was hosted by Cumberland University.
     The RedStorm, who were tied for fifth following Monday's first round and in 10th place at the close of Monday's second round, finished eighth in the 11-team field with a 7-over par total of 871.
     Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College took the team title at 50-under par 814, while the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) was second at 41-under 823 and the host Phoenix placed third at 36-under 828.
     Lindsey Wilson's Milan Reed took medalist honors individually, finishing at 19-under 197.
     Rio Grande's top individual showing came from sophomore Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for 30th place at even-par 216. He carded a 2-under par 70 over the final 18 holes.
     Seniors Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH) and Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH) were part of a three-way tie for 32nd place in the 60-player event, finishing at 1-over par 217.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Magnus Fabian (Stuttgart, Germany), who tied for 46th place at 7-over 223 and freshman Niklas Hacker (Bielefeld, Germany), who took 52nd place at 12-over 228.
     Rio Grande's reserve team also posted an eighth-place finish on Tuesday at the Alice Lloyd College Fall Invite, which concluded its two-day run at the StoneCrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky.
     The RedStorm finished with a 36-hole team total of 66-over par 642, which was two strokes behind Ohio Christian University in the 10-team field.
     The University of Pikeville rolled to the team title with a score of 14-under par 562, while West Virginia University-Tech was second at 15-over 591 and the UPike "B" entry was third at 28-over par 604.
     Medalist honors went to UPike's Lawson Hon, who finished at 6-under par 138.
     Junior Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia) had Rio's top individual outing, finishing 10th among the 55 competitors at 3-over par 147, including an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round.
     Also representing the RedStorm were sophomore Kameron Maple (Oak Hill, OH), who was part of a three-way tie for 35th place at 17-over par 161; junior Eli Adkins (Stout, OH), who was 41st at 20-over par 164; senior Zach Adkins (Albany, OH), who was one of two players tied for 45th place at 26-over 170; and sophomore Jacob Smeeks (Belpre, OH), who placed 52nd at 42-over 186.
     The reserve team returns to action on Sept. 22 at the IU East Invite in Muncie, Ind.
     The RedStorm varsity returns to the course on Sept. 25 and 26 at the Blue Raider Fall Classic in Columbia, Ky.
