RedStorm men open season at Merb Invitational

McDERMOTT, Ohio - Nicolas Gonzalez carded a 6-over par 78 to lead the University of Rio Grande "A" reserve team to a seventh place finish in Friday's Roger Merb Invitational, hosted by Shawnee State University at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.
Gonzalez, a junior from Medellin, Columbia, helped the RedStorm to a team score of 35-over par 323.
Rio also fielded a "B" team which finished in eighth-place among the 10 participating squads at 47-over 335.
The University of Pikeville's "A" unit won the team title at 4-over par 292, with Jon Bryant earning medalist honors individually at 1-under par 71.
Shawnee State's "B" entry was second at 297, while West Virginia University-Tech was third at 306.
Joining Gonzalez on the Rio "A" team were sophomore Jacob Smeeks (Belpre, OH), who shot a 7-over 79; sophomore Kameron Maple (Oak Hill, OH), who finished at 8-over par 80; freshman Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV), who carded a 14-over par round of 86; and freshman Zach North (Glouster, OH), who carded a 24-over 96.
Senior Zach Adkins (Albany, OH) topped the scores on the RedStorm "B" team with a 9-over par 81. He was joined by junior Eli Adkins (Stout, OH), who shot an 11-over 83; freshman Oliver Powell-Campbell (Cincinnati, OH), who finished at 13-over par 85; sophomore Tanner Lisle (Racine, OH), who carded a 14-over 86; and sophomore Lance Stewart (Racine, OH), who finished at 26-over 98.
Rio Grande returns to action on Monday, with action at two different venues.
The RedStorm varsity team will be at the Cumberland Phoenix Fall Invitational in Mount Juliet, Tenn. for 36 holes on Monday and 18 more on Tuesday.
Rio's reserve team will take part in the Alice Lloyd Fall Invite in Prestonsburg, Ky. on the same two days.
