RedStorm finishes seventh in Battle at the Brae

AUGUSTA, Mich. - Rodrigo Portilla finished in a tie for 12th place individually and led the University of Rio Grande men's golf team to a seventh-place finish in the Battle at the Brae hosted by Lawrence Tech University at Stoatin Brae Golf Club.
The 36-hole event concluded on Saturday afternoon.
Portilla, a freshman from Sevilla, Spain, was at even-par 71 after the opening round and finished at 8-over par 150. He was one of five players tied for 12th place in the field of 74 golfers.
As a team, the RedStorm fell into seventh place when all was said and done at 40-over par 608 after finishing the opening round in a tie for secon place, just six shots off the lead.
Host Lawrence Tech University, which held the lead after round one, took the team title at 15-over par 583.
Madonna (Mich.) University finished in second place at 594, while Indiana Tech took third place at 598.
Medalist honors as an individual went to Lawrence Tech's Bruno Vicente, who closed at 2-under par 140.
Others representing Rio Grande included junior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH), one of five players who tied for 17th place at 9-over par 151; senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), who was among six players tied for 22nd place at 10-over par 152; freshman Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who was one of nine players tied for 32nd place at 13-over par 155; and freshman Kameron Maple (Oak Hill, OH), one of three players who tied for 60th place at 22-over 164.
Rio Grande returns to action April 17-18 at the River States Conference Championship in Florence, Ky.
