Byrd posts top score for Rio at Midway Invite

     LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team posted a ninth-place finish in the Midway Eagle Invitational, which concluded its two-day run on Tuesday afternoon at the University Club Golf Course.
     The RedStorm, who were in eighth place among the 10 competing squads following Monday's opening round, finished with a team score of 54-over par 630.
     Indiana Wesleyan University won the team title with a score of 10-over par 586, while St. Thomas (Fla.) University took runner-up honors at 17-over par 593.
     Milligan (Tenn.) University placed third at 22-over par 598.
     Medalist honors went to Indiana Wesleyan's Kyle Sanders, who fired a 4-under par 68 in Tuesday's final round to finish the 36-hole event at 2-under par 142.
     Junior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH) provided Rio Grande with its best individual performance, finishing as one of three players tied for 26th place in the 58-player field at 10-over par 154.
     Others representing the RedStorm were freshman Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who was among a group of six players tied for 29th place at 11-over 155; senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), who was part of a four-way tie for 39th place at 15-over 159; senior Jensen Anderson (Racine, OH), who was 43rd at 16-over 160; freshman Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who tied with two others for 45th place at 18-over 162; and freshman Kameron Maple (Oak Hill, OH), who finished 52nd at 25-over par 169.
     Rio Grande returns to action this weekend as part of the Lawrence Tech Invite at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Mich.
