Rio men finish 7th at Deercroft Invite

WAGRAM, N.C. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team posted a seventh place finish in the Deercroft Spring Break Invite hosted by St. Andrews University.
The 36-hole event wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon.
The RedStorm, who were sixth in the 12-team field after Monday's opening round, finished at 49-over par 625.
Just nine shots separated Rio Grande from third-place finisher Southern Virginia.
Belmont Abbey College rallied from a seven-shot opening round deficit to win the team title at 26-over par 602.
Host St. Andrews, which coughed up the first round lead, finished second at 30-over par 606.
Individually, Rio Grande was led by freshman Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who tied for 17th place at 10-over par 154. He carded a 2-over par 74 in the final round.
The RedStorm were also represented by senior Jacob Calvin (Chillicothe, OH), who tied for 25th at 12-over par 156; freshman Nicolas Gonzalez (Medellin, Columbia), who was among three players tied for 27th place at 13-over 157; junior Whit Byrd (Pomeroy, OH), who was part of a four-way tie for 30th place at 14-over par 158; and freshman Kameron Maple (Oak Hill, OH), who tied for 39th place at 17-over par 161.
Medalist honors went to Belmont Abbey's Edardo Arango Perigault, who finished at even-par 144.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action this weekend when its "B" team competes in the Indiana University Kokomo Invitational in Kokomo, Ind.
The RedStorm varsity schedule resumes next Monday and Tuesday at the Midway Eagle Invite in Lexington, Ky.
