Catanese leads RedStorm men in season opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's bowling team opened up its 2025-26 schedule on the weekend of Sept. 20-21 with a ninth-place finish in the DO Apparel/Brunswick Collegiate Open and a fourth-place outing in the Capital Kickoff Classic.
The RedStorm took down 4,823 pins to finish ninth in the 12-team DO Apparel/Brunswick Collegiate, while Dominic Catanese was the individual medalist with 768 pins over three rounds for a 256 average.
Catanese, a junior from North Royalton, Ohio, also had Rio's single-game high by rolling a 278 in game two.
Belmont Abbey College won the team title with 5,629 pins, while Muskingum University (5,594) and Ohio State University (5,568) completed the top three.
Also representing the RedStorm was junior Jacob LeMaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 39th with 568 pins in three games; freshman Daniel Mast (Carlisle, PA), who finished 47th with 560 pins over three rounds; sophomore Sailor Cope (Chillicothe, OH), who was 71st with 500 pins in three rounds; and freshman Merik Candella (Columbus, OH) , who placed 87th after knocking down 437 pins over three games.
In the Capital Classic, Rio Grande toppled 4,643 pins as a team for fourth-place in the five-team event.
Ohio State University took team honors with 5,642 pins, while Capital University was second with 5,307 pins and Muskingum University was third (5,066).
Catanese was again the RedStorm's top performer with 657 pins over three rounds for a 219 average and an eighth-place finish individually.
Ohio State's Bryce Lewin won the individual crown with 789 pins, edging his teammate, David Hart, by four pins.
Also for Rio Grande, Mast was 21st with 566 pins in three rounds; LeMaster finished 25th with 547 pins in three games; Candella placed 28th with 530 pins in three games; and Cope was 31st with 517 pins over three rounds.
Rio's junior varsity teams were also in action in both tournaments.
The RedStorm finished last among the 11 teams in the DO Apparel with 2,236 pins and was sixth in the six-team Capital Classic with 2,273 pins.
Belmont Abbey "A" won the DO Apparel title with 5,584 pins, while Belmont Abbey "B" was second with 5,328 pins. The University of Northwestern Ohio rounded out the top three at 5,009 pins.
Freshman Caden Faust (Hillsboro, OH) led Rio individually with 446 pins over three games and finished 83rd overall.
The RedStorm's other competitors included freshman Logan Morris (Chillicothe, OH), who was 85th with 440 pins in three games and freshman Kameron Madison (Ripley, OH), who was 91st with 412 pin in his three games.
In the Capital Classic, Ohio State won the team championship with 4,749 pins. Muskingum "B" was second at 4.670 pins and Muskingum "A" was third with 4,594 pins.
Faust again led Rio with 524 pins over three games for 29th place, while Morris was 39th with 470 pins in his three games and Madison was 45th with 384 pins over three rounds.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament No. 1.
