Rio men open season with 7th place finish

     COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's bowling team opened their 2024-25 campaign with a sixth-place finish in the DO Apparel-Brunswick Collegiate Open.
     The two-day tournament finished up on Sunday at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
     The RedStorm finished with 8,136 total pins over nine rounds of team play.
     Belmont Abbey College finished first in the field of 10 schools with 9,467 pins. St. Vincent College (8,883 pins) and Muskingum University (8,870 pins) rounded out the top three.
     Mark Kaczynski of Belmont Abbey's junior varsity team had the top overall individual score in the field of 111 bowlers with 2,026 pins over nine games for an average of 225.1.
     Rio Grande's top performance came from junior Shawn Woodyard (Jackson, OH), who placed 16th with 1,825 pins over nine games for a 202.8 average.
     Woodyard also had Rio's top single-game high after rolling a 237 in game eight.
     Also representing the RedStorm varsity was sophomore Gage Hamm (Rushsylvania, OH), who placed 28th with 1,680 pins over nine games; sophomore Jacob Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 31st with 1,645 pins over nine games; sophomore Dominic Catanese (North Royalton, OH), who took 32nd place with 1,626 pins in nine games; and freshman Justin Lowery (Chillicothe, OH), who was 56th with 1,360 pins in nine games.
     Rio Grande also had an entry in the seven-team junior varsity bracket and finished seventh with 5,424 pins.
     Belmont Abbey also took the top spot among the JV squads with its No. 1 entry taking down 8,970 pins. Muskingum (8,774) was the runner-up, while Belmont Abbey No. 2 (8,731) took third place.
     The top individual showing for the RedStorm JV came from freshman Jakhai Agnew (Columbus, OH), who was 33rd overall with 1,616 pins over nine games for a 179.6 average. He also had his team's high game with a 211 in game seven.
     Also rolling for Rio was freshman Chase McMillen (Lewiston, OH), who was 58th with 1,339 pins in nine games; freshman Sailor Cope (Chillicothe, OH), who was 59th with 1,310 pins over nine games; and freshman Brian Laughman (Piqua, OH), who was 68th with 1,159 pins in nine games.
     Rio Grande is slated to return to action at the Ohio Bowling Conference No. 1 Tournament, October 5, in Columbus.
