Gross, Catanese earn All-Tournament honors at Raider Classic

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio - Daniel Gross finished fifth individually and the University of Rio Grande men's bowling team placed ninth in the varsity division of the Roto Grip Raider Classic, which wrapped up its two-day run on Sunday at the Beaver-Vu Lanes.
Gross, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, toppled 1,080 pins over five games for an average of 216. His fifth-place finish earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
As a team, the RedStorm took down 7,984 pins over five rounds of team play and 16 baker games.
Marian (Ind.) University won the team title with 8,813 pins, while host Wright State University was the runner-up with 8,558. Robert Morris (Pa.) Univesity was third at 8,373 pins and Shawnee State took fourth place with 8,270.
Ohio State University's David Hart won the individual championship with 1,196 pins over five games for an average of 239.2.
Also representing the Rio varsity in the field of 168 participants was senior Jalin Ragland (Columbus, OH), who finished 41st with 979 pins in five games; sophomore Alex Coffelt (Canton, OH), who was 43rd with 971 pins in five games; senior Reece Collins (Columbus, OH), who was 11th with 684 pins in four games; sophomore Shawn Woodyard (Jackson, OH), who was 125th with 572 pins in three games and the team's single-game high performance of 249; and junior Hunter Bolender (Mount Orab, OH), who was 135th with 491 pins over three rounds.
In the junior varsity division, Rio Grande finished second behind Marian among the seven competing schools. The RedStorm had 7,863 pins, while the Knights finished with 8,150 and Wright State was third at 7,406 pins.
The top four teams advanced to a three-game eliminator round, with Rio Grande and Marian advancing to the championship.
The Knights defeated the RedStorm in the final, 421-283.
Freshman Dominic Catanese (North Royalton, OH) led the Rio JV squad, earning All-Tournament honors with a third-place showing among individuals in the junior varsity bracket.
Catanese was 36th overall with 990 pins in five games for an average of 198. He had the single-game high among the RedStorm's reserve players with a 223 in his second game.
Also representing Rio in the JV division was sophomore Nathaniel Wiles (Cheboygan, MI), who was 50th with 962 pins in five games; freshman Gage Hamm (Rushsylvania, OH), who finished 64th with 923 pins in five rounds; freshman Jacob Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 78th with 879 pins over five games; and freshman Tyler Knight (West Liberty, OH), who placed 86th with 861 pins in five games.
Rio Grande will return to action next Saturday at the Ohio Bowling Conference No. 3 Tournament in Columbus.
