RedStorm gets Top 10 finish from Gross at OBC No. 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Daniel Gross rolled his way to a Top 10 finish and led the University of Rio Grande men's bowling team to a seventh place finish in the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament No. 1 at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
Gross, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, finished sixth in the field of 202 bowlers by taking down 977 pins over five games for an average of 195.4.
Gross also gave Rio its top single-game score for the tourney with a 223 in round three.
In the team competition, the RedStorm finished seventh among the 20 schools with 6,523 pins over five rounds of team play and 12 subsequent rounds of baker play.
The University of Northwestern Ohio won the team title with 7,038 pins, while Muskingum University was the runner-up at 6,967 pins. Robert Morris (Pa.) University took third place with 6,955 pins.
Robert Morris' Matthew Hanson took medalist honors with 1,097 pins in five games for an average of 219.4.
In the junior varsity division, Rio Grande took third place among the 13 competing schools with 4,921 pins toppled. UNOH also won the JV team crown with 5,089 pins, while Muskingum edged Rio for the runner-up spot with 4,978 pins.
The junior varsity division also included five rounds of team play and a dozen baker games.
Along with Gross, Rio was represented in the varsity division by senior Reece Collins (Columbus, OH), who was 15th with 933 pins over five games for an average of 186.6; freshman Gage Hamm (Rushsylvania, OH), who finished 26th with 888 pins over five games for an average of 177.6; sophomore Alex Coffelt (Canton, OH), who placed 35th after averaged 169.8 by toppling 849 pins in five games; freshman Jacob Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 91st with 625 pins in four games for an average of 156.3; and freshman Dominic Catanese (North Royalton, OH), who was 199th with 122 pins in his only round.
Rio's junior varsity entry was topped by sophomore Nathaniel Wiles (Cheboygan, OH), who was 63rd with 718 pins in four games for a 179.5 average.
Also rolling for the RedStorm on the JV level was comprised of senior Jalin Ragland (Columbus, OH), who finished 70th with 692 pins in four games for a 173.0 average; sophomore Shawn Woodyard (Jackson, OH), who finished 77th with 676 pins in four games and an average of 169.0; junior Hunter Bolender (Mount Orab, OH), who placed 95th with 619 pins in four games for an average of 154.8; and freshman Tyler Knight (West Lilberty, OH), who was 116th with 554 pins in four games for a 138.5 average.
The top individual finish among the junior varsity bowlers was recorded by Shawne State University's Tyler Roberts, who was 53rd with 783 pins in four games for an average of 195.8.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action at the OBC's No. 2 Tournament on Oct. 21 in Columbus.
