RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande broke open a close game by scoring 11 of the first 13 points in the second half and pulling away for a 73-48 win over Wilmington College, Friday afternoon, in non-conference men's basketball play at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Rio Grande improved to 3-0 with the win and remained perfect in eight all-time meetings with the NCAA Division III Quakers.
Wilmington, which has yet to play a regular season game, designated the contest as an exhibition.
The Quakers hung tough in the opening half and trailed just 28-27 after a jumper by Rashid Chisholm with 2:56 left before the intermission.
Rio Grande scored the final four points of the period to claim its five-point halftime advantage and then used its 11-2 spurt to open the final half to build a 14-point cushion, 43-29, following a layup by sophomore Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) with 16:21 left to play.
Wilmington, which shot just 25 percent from the floor in the second half, got no closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the RedStorm continued to methodically widen their lead.
Rio's largest lead of the day came with the game's final margin of victory.
Senior Miki Tadic (Hilversum, The Netherlands) led the RedStorm with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
Robertson added 17 points in the winning effort, while senior Taylor Mack (Akron, OH) had 10 rebounds.
Rio Grande shot 57.7 percent in the second half and finished the game at 29-for-61 overall (47.5%).
The RedStorm also outrebounded their guests, 41-31, including 21-10 over the final 20 minutes.
Elijah Cathey led Wilmington with 10 points off the bench, while Gavin Heimlich tallied eight points and a team-best five rebounds.
The Quakers finished the game 18-for-54 overall (33.3%) from the floor.
