Shooting woes, turnovers doom RedStorm men

Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's basketball team has made its bones this season on the combination of good shooting and its ability to take care of the ball.
On Saturday afternoon against Indiana University Southeast, the RedStorm did neither and paid a high price for it.
The visiting Grenadiers finished the first half on a 19-2 run and built a 22-point second half lead en route to an eventual 75-65 victory at the Newt Oliver Arena.
IU Southeast improved to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play with the win, pushing its all-time record against Rio Grande to 8-2 in the process.
The RedStorm, who received votes in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll earlier in the week, had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the RSC.
The loss was just the second in the last 15 games for head coach Ryan Arrowood's squad.
Rio found itself in front, 23-18, following a three-pointer by Kaden Warner (Cincinnati, OH) with 6:16 left in the first half, but IUS scored 19 of the final 21 points in the period to take a 37-25 cushion at the intermission.
The Grenadiers continued pulling away with a 19-9 run to begin the second half, taking their largest lead of the day, 56-34, after a layup by Anthony Wales, Jr. with 10:31 remaining in the contest.
Rio Grande got no closer than the game's final margin the rest of the way.
After taking their five-point first half lead, the RedStorm went 4-for-17 from the floor (23.5%) and committed 11 turnovers over the next 15:45 of game time.
Rio entered the game shooting 44.8 percent for the season and managed to finish a respectable 40 percent for the contest (22-for-55), but those numbers required a 13-for-19 finish after a 9-for-36 start.
The RedStorm also went into the game shooting just over 38 percent from three-point range and averaging 10.5 trifectas per outing. They finished with 10 in the loss, but on 35 tries from beyond the arc (28.6%).
Turnovers were also a major issue.
Rio averaged just 10.9 turnovers per contest entering the game, but was victimized by a season-high 18 miscues, helping to fuel a whopping 22-1 IUS advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Grenadiers hit just three of 18 three-point attempts (16.7%) and was outrebounded, 37-34, but finished 29-for-66 overall (43.6%), 14-for-16 at the foul line (87.5%) and committed only four turnovers.
Glenn Hill, Jr. led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Southeast with a game-high 23 points, while Jocobi Hendricks added 18 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, a team-best two assists and a game-high three steals.
Wales, Jr. tallied 14 points in the win, while Jaivaughn Jackson contributed 10 points off the bench.
Senior Shiloah Blevins (South Webster, OH) led Rio Grande with 19 points nd nine rebounds, while sophomore Khamani Smith (Fort Wayne, IN) and freshman Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The RedStorm are scheduled to return to action on Thursday night against Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky.
Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
