Eagles hold off RedStorm men

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - Simon Christon scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, including six in an 11-0 run which helped Alice Lloyd College pull away from the University of Rio Grande and post an eventual 76-74 win over the RedStorm, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's basketball action at the ALC Student Activities Center.
The Eagles snapped a four-game losing slide, improving to 8-12 overall and 3-7 inside the conference with the victory.
Rio Grande slipped to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in the RSC with the loss.
The RedStorm trailed by as many as 11 points late in the first half and by 10 points with just over 10 minutes left to play, but a layup by freshman Gunner Short (Catlettsburg, KY) culminated a 11-2 run and sliced the deficit to 57-56 with 6:56 remaining.
That's when Christon went to work, scoring the final six points in an 11-0 run over the next three minutes which produced a 68-56 advantage - Alice Lloyd's largest lead of the contest.
Rio Grande got no closer the rest of the way, although a conventional three-point play by junior Hadith Tiggs (Mayfield Heights, OH) with :00.3 seconds left did get the RedStorm back within two.
However, the Eagles were able to successfully get the ball inbounds after a Rio timeout to nail down the victory.
Christon, who also finished with a team-best nine rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, was actually one of four players to reach double figures for ALC.
Noah Young finished with 18 points in the winning effort, while Chance Cornette dropped in 14 and Ryan House finished with 11.
Short had a game-high 19 points for Rio Grande, while senior Earl Russell (Warrington, England) had a career-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-best four blocked shots.
Tiggs also contributed a double-double effort of his own in a losing cause, tallying 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and junior Cameron Schreiter (Mason, OH) chipped in with 11 points.
Rio Grande shot 64 percent in the second half and 51 percent from the floor in the game, but hit just 17 of its 25 field goal attempts.
The RedStorm return to action on Tuesday night, traveling to Pittsburgh to fact Carlow.
Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. at Oakland Catholic High School's Donahue Pavillion.
