BATAVIA, Ohio - For the first time in program history, the University of Rio Grande bass fishing team is bringing home the hardware.
Two members of the RedStorm squad captured the 2025 Ohio Bass Nation Bass Fishing Collegiate State Qualifier Championship at East Fork Lake.
By virtue of the title, head coach Tom Sutton's duo earned a spot in the 2025 Strike King Bassmaster College Championship, which is scheduled for July 10-12, on Cherokee Lake in Jefferson City, Tenn.
The team of senior Cody Brumfield (Gallipolis, OH) and junior Alexander McCarty (Bloomingburg, OH) sealed the deal with a two-day weight of 10.82 lbs.
"This tournament is one that our anglers have had circled on the calendar and we've been working for as a program with our three second place finishes and two third place finishes in the past," said Sutton. "One of our team goals for the season was to bust through that skid and bring the championship hardware to Rio Grande. This duo is the first team in program history to qualify for the coveted Bassmaster National Championship."
As a whole, the RedStorm fared very well for the event with a mix of young and veteran talent anchored by Brumfield and McCarty.
The team of freshman Noah Cremeens (Gallipolis, OH) and freshman Coen Davis (Jackson, OH) finished the event in fourth place overall with 7.01 lbs., while the duo of senior Austin Shields (Albany, OH) and graduate senior Kayleigh Osborne (Oak Hill, OH) rounded out the top five with 6.73 lbs.
The team of sophomore Zackery Burroughs (St. Paris, OH) and sophomore Jackson Lutz (Hudson, OH) finished in sixth place, while the team of freshman Ian Conley (Gallipolis, OH) and freshman Dylan Sheets (Gallipolis, OH) finished the event in eighth place and the duo of freshman Cameron Burgess (Oxford, OH) and freshman Tyler Eggers (Jackson, OH) placed ninth.
"I want to give a big thank you for all of the support and encouragement for our anglers from our sponsors and fans. It is greatly appreciated and we couldn't do this without each and every one," Sutton said. "We also need to give a big shoutout to our amazing support team on hand at the event. It means a great deal to each of our anglers and also our program."
